Paul, I would suggest that you not worry about this situation until he comes to you in person and requests (while sober) that you sponsor. If that occurs, you might suggest someone you yourself would consider as a sponsor. As honesty is the best policy, do not hesitate to explain why you feel you can not give what is necessary at this time. It never hurts however to take a moment of time on the phone if this person calls you back. If he is not sober I would ask that he call me back when he is. Good Luck

Paul, my suggestion to you, is to first off say, call me back when you are sober and we can talk then, or, I am not able to be in your life in the capacity of a sponsor at the present time my plate is full, however, maybe you can start going to meetings and let them know you are in need of a sponsor.
Good luck

Dear Paul,
I am only 6 months sober on October 2nd. Just found out my first sponser relapsed 2 weeks ago. She's 11 years in the program and her longest time sober 1 year. Another friend went out I found out yesterday.
A woman asked me to be her sponser when she found out her sponser went out and I simply said I am too new and don't have enough time in. This is certainly a selfish program, with lots of love to offer.
I follow what the old timers say 2 years at least. Thank god I found temporary sponsers as well as the tables are also, that has kept me sober. Now, I am fortunate that I've a new sponser, but it took me time to seek her out.
Also, as you put in your note. Just kindly say that I am already at my limit with sponsees, but I'll be glad to be your friend. I truly love AA, it saved my life. All I have is today and for me it's time for bed which means I've stayed sober another day.
I wish you the best,
Vicki

aloha...I recently went through a situation where I was asked to sponsor someone and I am at my limit currently with the number of sponsees I have (I believe that I cannot be of service to anyone if I take on more sponsees than I have time to give)...My sponsor suggested that I share that I am honored that they asked, but that it fairness to them and my other sponsees, I cannot take on another sponsee, but I did give my phone number because I can be a source of sober support and I can also go with them to meetings to introduce them to other women who might be able to help them.
