Hi, Irish! Thanks for taking this on. I've never been to an Adult Children of Alcoholics meeting, though I am one.

hi dean,
i wouldnt call it a meeting....it would be more of a forum for acoas.
i too am an aduld child of an alcholic.

have you ever been to any of the acoa meetings?
or the online forums?
theres loads of things about acoa i didnt know until i came into recovery, especially about why i act and react to things the way i do.

doesnt look like anyone is interested in acoa anyway lol.

hi lucia,

my dad was also an alkie, so is my hubby( sober thank god) and my brother.
but all of my family are dysfuntional.

in acoa like any 12 step meeting, the thing is to focus on yourself and why you react to things that happen.

if you both would like i'll post the acoa laundry list?

and the 12 steps

welcome to the board.

love in recovery

I have never been to an ACoA meeting. My father was an alcoholic who died from the illness. So, I went to my first AA function when I was just a kid, a New Year's Eve party. I grew up in a world of sanitariums, drying out places, and broken families. Heck, my mom and dad met on the Alcohol Ward of the Camarillo State Hospital! I grew up hating him, blaming him (and God) for all my troubles. Turned out that I was an alcoholic, too. Sitting in a Book Study meeting one night in early sobriety, it hit me that dear old dad was sick. He didn't set out to make my life miserable. He had been sick, as I had become sick with alcoholism and as I had done all sorts of damage I never intended to do. That night, in that meeting, all of the hate and ill-will fell away. I was released.

As for the other questions, we recently had a server crash and lost the last month's posts. It isn't that not many people come to these forums. The web site gets over 400 visitors a day. Sometimes, it's a little difficult to get them talking. Plus, the Club is still relatively new, under a year old. Things will pick up as visitors see how incredibly interesting we all are! smile.gif

hi dean,

are you still attending AA?
my hubby is sober 25 years, he went in when he was 17...pretty young eh!
he didnt come from an alcoholic home, but it was dysfunctional.

i only recently went into recovery....although living with an AA member i already lived some of the program :-)

i dont know how i ever survived without acoa...its what keeps me sane!

like you i blamed my dad and mam on everything....and i hated drink with a passion....god love me i thought i was the only sane person in my family...i was the fixer, the one who sorted out everyones problems, and never dealt with my own!

my son goes to the new years eve parties too lol.

i'm in councelling for the last six months for ptsd....due to a car crash.
but from what i have learned in acoa and what i have read i may have suffered from ptsd for years due to the madness in my homelife as a kid.

love in recovery.

Yes, I still attend AA meetings. (Sober since Nov 6, 1987.) And do a lot of service work.
